As an older woman, I have come to understand the importance of taking care of my skin. While many of us turn to skincare products to achieve healthy-looking skin, we often overlook the impact that our diet can have on our complexion. The food we consume can either nourish or harm our skin, and as we age, it becomes even more crucial to pay attention to what we eat. Over the years, I have discovered that certain foods can have a negative effect on my skin. Here are the top foods that I avoid to maintain a more healthy-looking complexion:

1. Sugar and sweets

Sugar is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to unhealthy skin. High levels of sugar in the blood can lead to inflammation and break down collagen, which can result in wrinkles and sagging skin. As a self-proclaimed sweet tooth, I have learned to cut back on sugar and go for healthier alternatives such as fruit or dark chocolate.

2. Dairy

Dairy products such as milk, cheese, and butter can also negatively impact our skin. Dairy contains hormones that can increase oil production in the skin, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. I have noticed a significant improvement in my skin since cutting back on dairy and going for plant-based alternatives.

3. Processed Foods

Processed foods such as chips, packaged snacks, and fast food are high in refined carbohydrates, which can cause inflammation in the body and lead to breakouts. These foods also often contain high levels of salt and preservatives, which can dehydrate the skin and cause puffiness. I have found that sticking to whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins has improved my skin's appearance.

While it may be tempting to unwind with a glass of wine or cocktail, drinking alcohol can lead to dehydration, which can cause dry, dull, and flaky skin. Alcohol also increases inflammation in the body, which can contribute to skin redness, puffiness, and breakouts. Over time, excessive alcohol consumption can also lead to premature aging by damaging collagen and elastin fibers in the skin. Additionally, alcohol can interfere with the absorption of important vitamins and minerals needed for healthy skin, such as vitamin A, C, and E. Limiting alcohol consumption can help maintain a healthy, youthful complexion.

Fried and greasy foods such as fried chicken, french fries, and pizza can wreak havoc on our skin. Eating greasy and fried foods can contribute to skin issues such as acne and breakouts. These foods are high in unhealthy fats that can cause inflammation in the body and skin. Inflammation can lead to clogged pores and increased sebum production, which can result in acne. Additionally, fried foods are often cooked in high temperatures, leading to the production of free radicals that damage skin cells and contribute to premature aging. To maintain healthy skin, it's important to limit the consumption of greasy and fried foods and opt for healthier options like fruits, vegetables, and lean protein.

6. Caffeine

Consuming too much caffeine can have negative effects on the skin. Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it dehydrates the body and skin. This can lead to dry, dull, and flaky skin. Additionally, caffeine can increase cortisol levels, which can lead to breakouts and premature aging. Caffeine can also interfere with the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals that are crucial for maintaining healthy skin. While moderate caffeine consumption is generally safe, excessive intake should be avoided to maintain a healthy, youthful complexion.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye that can cause inflammation in some people. This inflammation can lead to skin issues such as acne, rosacea, and eczema. While I am not gluten intolerant, I have found that limiting my gluten intake has helped to improve my skin's appearance.


In a nutshell, our diet plays a crucial role in achieving healthy-looking skin, especially as we age. By avoiding these seven foods, I have noticed a significant improvement in my complexion. Of course, it is important to remember that everyone's skin is unique, and what works for me may not work for you.
